Fluorescent Umwelt

UGM est heureux de présenter Fluorescent Umwelt, une intervention artistique réalisée dans l’ancien bâtiment du bureau des impôts situé sur la place Leon Štukelj à Maribor. À l’aide de lumières fluorescentes, l’artiste Guillaume Stagnaro transforme la façade de ce bâtiment vide et abandonné, situé au centre-ville, en un environnement lumineux vivant et surprenant. De longs tubes fluorescents sont installés derrière chacune des fenêtres des anciens bureaux et sont programmés pour se déclencher à intervalles prédéfinis. Ils sont équipés d’un mécanisme programmé par l’artiste pour synchroniser les lumières entre elles et générer ainsi un comportement d’ensemble. L’intervention kafkaïenne de Guillaume Stagnaro transforme le caractère architectural de ce bâtiment désaffecté en une forme vivante se métamorphosant à la tombée de la nuit.

« Fluorescent Umwelt est une intervention artistique dans l’espace public qui s’inscrit dans le prolongement d’une recherche autour de la notion de parasitisme et s’inspire directement de la lecture de l’ouvrage fondateur d’éthologie « A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans » (1934) de Jacob von Uexküll. Dans son ouvrage, von Uexküll développe la notion d’Umwelt selon laquelle « chaque espèce vivante possède son propre univers, auquel elle donne un sens et impose sa détermination ». Nous partageons et interagissons aujourd’hui de manière quasi permanente avec une autre « espèce » qui, tout comme les espèces vivantes décrites par von Uexküll, possède son propre univers. Les objets programmés, omniprésents dans notre société moderne, donnent un nouveau sens au monde grâce à leur capacité à percevoir et à agir sur lui, tout comme l’éthologie a permis à l’humanité de porter un regard nouveau sur le monde à l’époque. Fluorescent Umwelt est l’invasion (temporaire) du système électrique de l’ancien bâtiment du bureau des impôts par une colonie représentative de cette nouvelle espèce. Une colonie de petits organismes qui se nourrissent d’électricité et jouent avec les lumières après le coucher du soleil. » Guillaume Stagnaro

Avec cette intervention lumineuse au cœur de la ville de Maribor, UGM souligne le potentiel de l’esplanade urbaine – la place Leon Štukelj – en tant qu’espace de rassemblement social, d’interaction et d’expression créative. UGM ouvre également de nouvelles perspectives quant à l’usage de ce bâtiment aujourd’hui désaffecté, qui abritait autrefois les bureaux de l’administration fiscale Yougoslave, un exemple marquant de l’architecture brutaliste des années 1970 réalisé par l’architecte Vlado Emeršič, originaire de Maribor.

UGM proudly presents Fluorescent Umwelt – an art intervention in the former Tax Office building on Leon Štukelj Square in Maribor. Using flickering fluorescent lights, artist Guillaume Stagnaro turned the façade of the empty and abandoned building on the central city location into a lively and surprising light ambient. Long fluorescent tubes are installed on empty office windows and have been set to flicker in prearranged intervals. They are equipped with a mechanism, which has been programmed by the artist to synchronise all the lights and to enable autonomous behavior. Kafkaesque intervention by Guillaume Stagnaro changes the character of architecture from a disused building to a living form and thus generates its nightly metamorphosis.

“Fluorescent Umwelt is an Art intervention in public space following a research around the idea of parasitism and is directly inspired by the reading of the seminal book of Ethology ‘A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans’ (1934) by Jacob von Uexküll. In his book von Uexküll develops the notion of Umwelt according to which “every living species has its own universe, to which it gives meaning and imposes its determination”. We share and interact today almost permanently with another kind of « species” which, much as the living species described by von Uexküll, has his own universe. Programmed objects, ubiquitous in our modern society, because of their ability to perceive and act on the world give a new meaning to it in the same way that ethology allowed mankind to take a new look at the world at that time. Fluorescent Umwelt is the (temporary) invasion of the electrical system of the former Tax Office building by a colony representative of this new species. A colony of small organisms that feed on electricity and play with the lights after sunset.” Guillaume Stagnaro

With this light intervention UGM wishes to demonstrate the potential of a large new city square – in this case the Leon Štukelj Square – as a space of social gathering, interaction and creative expression. On the other hand we wish to display new possible ways of using an empty building in the city centre. The building, which used to house the offices of Tax Administration in former Yugoslavia, is a seminal example of 1970s brutalist architecture. It is a Slovene modernist architecture monument and an important work of Maribor architect Vlado Emeršič. Today the building is empty and its identity lost in time and space. 

The project is a collaboration between UGM and OTTO-Prod.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Guillaume Stagnaro (né en 1975, vit à Marseille) est artiste plasticien, enseignant et chercheur. Il mène une exploration pratique, spéculative et théorique dans le domaine de la cybernétique à travers la réalisation d’œuvres d’art numérique et d’installations. Depuis plusieurs années, il travaille avec de nombreux artistes pour lesquels il conçoit et fabrique des systèmes informatiques, robotiques et électroniques. Il a été artiste en résidence au Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe, entre 1999 et 2001 (au sein du collectif « esc to begin »). Il enseigne à l’atelier Hypermedia de l’École supérieure d’art d’Aix-en-Provence (ESAAix).

Guillaume Stagnaro (born 1975, lives in Marseille) is visual artist, teacher and researcher, he conducts a practical, speculative and theoretical exploration in the field of cybernetics through the realization of digital art pieces and installations. For several years he worked with many artists for whom he designs and manufactures computing, robotic and electronic systems. He was a residency artist at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe, between 1999-2001 (within a collective ‘esc to begin’). He teaches in the Hypermedia workshop of Aix-en-Provence Art School (ESAAix).
